CHEEK TO CHEEK

Of course, much is in the eye of the beholder where personal plates are concerned, so whether you consider A1 BUM (£6,757) as a suitable number for a vinyl record collector, or for someone with a high opinion of their own posterior, is entirely up to you.

Similarly, OLD 91T (£8,940) may seem like a reference to the age of someone whose initial is 'T'. It could also be an uncomplimentary description of that, or another, elderly person. Charming.

ONLINE SOCIALS

The auctions always feature numbers that allude to the world of technology and social media. Most YouTube viewers will immediately see the reference in MRB 345T (£12,150), while young gamers will have no trouble recognising the game platform represented by ROB 10X (£9,582).

O DEAR – none of the historic O plates made it into the top 10 this time around, but Im sure we haven’t seen the last of them.

END OF A 34 YEAR ERA !!!

The first ever live auction in 1989 saw just 74 lots offered for sale at Christie's London, with the first lot offered for sale by DVLA, 99 MG, selling for £8,000, compared to a massive 1000 lots in this auction.

Over the years auctions have been held at venues which have been chosen to attract visitors. Sales have been held at the world famous Crufts Dog Show, Granada Studios in Manchester, Ascot Racecourse and at the London Mayor’s office at City Hall.

Accelerated by the necessity to provide the latest technology, which allowed customers to bid in real time from anywhere in the world, the venue styles typically used where modern hotels who can easily provide the very best in internet facilities and technical support to ensure that no bid is missed.

Prices and totals at this historic sale reflected the subdued run-up to the event. All the lots sold but no records were broken. Despite the modest takings, there were still plenty of interesting and amusing lots on offer.

After this last ever DVLA live auction comprising of 1000 lots, all of which were sold. Purchasers spent a total of £4,401,928, delivering £4,119,180 to the treasury.

The next Auction will be back online and starts on Wednesday, 22 Nov 2023 10:00 AM and ends on Tuesday, 28 Nov 2023.
