If you wish to have private number plates on your vehicle you must acquire the right to display the new number. This means having the number officially transferred to your vehicle in place of its old number. It is illegal to display a registration number that is NOT the number shown on the vehicle’s V5C and you CANNOT change your registration number by buying plastic number plates and swapping the plates.
Additionally, plates must conform to a set of specifications relating to colour; size; reflectivity; decoration and character size, font and spacing. Failing to comply with display regulations can result in MOT failure, a fine and permanent loss of the registration number concerned.
Another consideration when purchasing personalised number plates is the compatibility of the vehicle and the registration number. It is illegal to make an older car look younger with a registration that uses a year code later than the original date of the car. So, for example it is not legal to display a current style ‘19’ number plate on a vehicle that is older than the year 2019 but is legal to display it on 2020 vehicles etc.
A private number plate, also known as a personal registration or cherished plate, lets you customise your vehicle's identity. When a car is made, it's assigned a default registration number by the DVLA. But with a private number plate, you can make it uniquely yours. Express yourself with a word, your name, or even a fun saying. The possibilities are boundless!

Four number plate formats have been used: dateless, suffix, prefix, and current-style.
When one format exhausted its combinations, a new system was introduced.
The current-style format, launched in 2001, was designed for up to 50 years of unique registrations.
However, a personal number plate can't make your vehicle appear newer than it is.

Demand is a pivotal price driver. The greater the interest in your registration, the higher its value upon sale.

The characters in suffix, prefix, and current-style plates reveal the initial registration date.
For instance, if your plate displays '15', you can't transfer a plate showing '22'.
Notably, dateless plates are the sole type of registration that can be affixed to any vehicle.
