The latest DVLA Auction March/April 2023 was the 2nd online only event of 2023 – starting on Wednesday 29th March and ending on Tuesday 4th April 2023.

There were a few decent plates up for grabs but nothing that were headline grabbers, that said there were a few not quite so perfect plates that still commanded good prices showing that the plate market is still strong in the current economy.

CONTINUING THE TREND – 197 O

Yet again this auctions’ top plate was an “O” dateless reg, following on the trend from previous auction results, 46 O £75,194 (Feb 23), 42 O £124.204 (Jan 23), 66 O £81,113 (Nov 22) – although 197 O prices was slightly less due at £54,021 all in, due to it having the extra digit.

NOT QUITE THE REAL DEAL

Coming in 3rd place was OEV 1L at £38,612 all-in, probably the nearest to the DEV 1L plate which sold by DVLA in December 21 for the staggering amount of £308,252 bought by us here at Moonstone Plates Ltd, putting this straight into the super plate league category. In our opinion it is the better resemblance and despite the slight mis-spelling the buyer obviously thought the same as us in that it was the better of some of the other versions already sold at previous auctions. DEV 11L sold for £37,573 in Oct 2022 and DEV 111L sold for £15,873 in Feb 2023.

Also, other plates that were far from perfect, but you can clearly see what they are aiming for are SOP 91E (£28,341) and AMB 11R (£27,057) while they achieved a great price for what they are, they are not as high as they would be for perfect representations or the reg. Furthermore a few number 1 registrations made the sale, these included 1 THS (£25,644), 1 JXD (£24,489) and 1 YDS (£20,021).

In total, 2473 sales were made and 26 numbers that went unsold. Buyers parted with a total of £7,205,192.96, of which £6,823,172.16 went to DVLA/government.

A Fond Farewell

The DVLA plans to hold only two more live venue auctions before returning to online events permanently. Many people will miss the live events as they were an opportunity to have a catch up with fellow enthusiasts, but with the success of the “ALL online auctions” that had initially been forced due to the Covid 19 and with the advances in technology as well as economic and logistic considerations, it means that this has been on the cards for a while.

The next DVLA live venue auction will be held at Casa Hotel, Lockoford lane, Chesterfield, S41 7JB in June. Meanwhile, DVLA's next sale will be an online timed auction running from Wednesday 10th May until Tuesday 16th May 2023.
