TOP OF THE SHOP

Taking the No1 slot this time was 911 OG at £64,408, one of a number of different registrations in this auction that would appealed to Porsche 911 fans, although quite surprised it went as high as it did.

The next on the list was FER 458A (£38,844), which is obviously a reference to the Ferrari 458 Speciale A. Closely following in third place was another 911 plate, THE 911K at £38,600. Fourth and fifth positions were taken by 14 YTH (£32,193) and 11 HSD (£32,180) respectively. We think that the appeal of 14 YTH may well be its resemblance to the Arabic name Layth.

STILL TRENDING

Another 'O' registration that has dominated recent events. 8888 O (£31,037) was the highest placed 'O' registration. This is a fabulous looking plate and would look amazing on any car.

Meanwhile, 760 O (£27,057) and 54 OO (£26,415) were the closest rivals in that category.

Number plates that don't represent a word, name or message, but have strong visual impact, have also been popular at recent auctions. Symmetry in particular is now a big hit with buyers and at an all-in price of £15,501, OO05 OOO was a perfect example.

Names

There were quite a few name registrations sold for bargain prices, and we wouldn’t be surprised to see them back on the market for much higher prices.

Amongst them were SF51 NGH (£17,054) was one of several 'Singh' plates to have come out of the 51 series, and also OO73 OND (£14,204) was a great find for any fan of the famous spy. Others were KA73 LYN, which sold for just £6,513, ES73 LLE (£6,333) and CU22 RAN (£4,715).

Words

C411 NOW (£6,513) this would be a great plate for any business, possibly someone with a connection to telesales or call centres. NOT 84D (£16,014) is exactly how we would describe the performance of this one. Possibly a musician bought FLU 7E (£9,800) And presumably AP05 TLE at £8,272 was bought by someone who supports a particular belief or political movement. A clergyman perhaps? but many of the other words were a lot harder to guess.

PA71 ENT (£7,784) could be meant in the medical context, or it could describe someone who is happy to wait for something. VE73 RAN (£10,429) is, perhaps, less of a mystery. A great plate for any veteran car fan, or for an ex-military person wanting to show pride in their service to the country.

Cars

Other probable Porsche purchases included 911 XXV (£15,334) and 911 ANA (£12,920), while, presumably, 770 DBS was bought by someone lucky enough to own both an Aston Martin DBS 770 Ultimate and the money to pay £25,901 to equip it with a terrific number plate!

The September auctions saw 2467 numbers sold and 33 numbers unsold. Bidders spent a total of £7,324,009, with £6,857,780 going to the government in revenue.

The next DVLA auction will be at live venue auction and will be held on the 18th, 19th and 20th October 2023 at Stratford Manor Hotel, Warwick Road, CV37 0PY, this is expected to be the last live venue auction, with all future auctions taking place online.
