Number Plates owned by the Royal Family

Royal Family Number Plates

The royal family's collection of personalised plates, as to be expected are both exclusive and fascinating which reflect a rich history and tradition of pure elegance and luxury.

Through the years, the British royal family have been seen driving or mostly being chauffeured in some of the most luxurious and sumptuous vehicles that have ever been made. They have an impressive fleet of both modern and classic cars from prestigious brands like Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Jaguar and while royal state cars do not display number plates, they are registered with dateless plates.

Here are just some of the notable dateless registrations associated with the royal family:

- A 7

- MYT 1, MYT 2, MYT 3

- NLT 1, NLT 2, NLT 6, NLT 7

- OXR 1, OXR 2

- 3 GXM, 1 ANN

- LD 4352, LB 7078

- JJ 4, JJ 5

Queen Elizabeth II

The late Queen Elizabeth II, who very sadly passed away on September 8, 2022, was known for her love and passion for driving, even though she never had or needed a driving license. Amongst her private number plates were MYT 1, MYT 2, and MYT 3, all registered to Range Rovers. MYT 1 was notably seen on a Range Rover at her funeral, a nod to her title as the 'Mighty One.'

The Queen also owned the registration A 7, one of the first number plates issued in 1903 by the London council.

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother

The Queen Mother also had a very impressive collection of classic state cars. She inherited a pair of Daimler DE 36s from King George VI in 1952, with one of them bearing the plate NLT 2. In 1954, she purchased another Daimler DE 36, which was re-registered as NLT 6 and this was used regularly. Her personal Daimler DK400 limousine was registered as NLT 1, and she also owned a Jaguar Mark VII M, later replaced by an XJ12, registered as NLT 7.

Prince Philip

Throughout the years, Prince Philip has owned several memorable cars, including a Lagonda Drophead Coupe bought in 1954, originally registered as OXR 1. This registration was later assigned to a Land Rover Freelander. He also drove a Land Rover Discovery with the plate OXR 2.

Princess Margaret

Queen Elizabeth II’s sister, Princess Margaret, owned a silver Rolls Royce Wraith II with the registration 3 GXM. This car was custom-fitted with features to her preference.

Princess Anne

Princess Anne once held the registration 1 ANN, a private plate she eventually relinquished for security reasons. The plate, now valued at £125k, was sold in 2005. Another plate, ANN 1, is currently valued at £200k.

Queen Alexandra

After King Edward VII’s death in 1910, Queen Alexandra inherited his 1907 Daimler shooting brake with the registration LD 4352. She also frequently used a 1910 Landaulette registered as LB 7078.

King George VI

King George VI had a fondness for Lanchester cars, acquiring several in the 1920s and 1930s. Before his father’s death, he ordered two Daimlers that were rebadged as Lanchesters and registered with JJ 4 and JJ 5.

With King Charles III’s ascension, it is likely he will inherit the dateless number plates previously owned by Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother. As the monarch, he is also not required to display number plates, so these private registrations may never be seen on his cars, which include a Jaguar XJ, Aston Martin DB6 Volante, and an electric Jaguar I-Pace. However, the royal fleet will undoubtedly continue to grow with more elegant vehicles and exclusive dateless registrations.
