WHERE TO START YOUR SEARCH
There are a lot of private number plate dealers to search through as well as us here at Moonstone Plates. With social media readily available to buy & sell items such as these, you do have to be careful you understand how the process works and not fall into the wrong hands. Unless you are buying through a reputable company like us here at Moonstone Plates, do not part with your money until you have seen / received the retention certificate as its this that is proof of ownership. (Unfortunately, there are a lot of scammers on the market who will claim they have private number plates to buy and sell – Be Careful)
DIFFERENT STYLES AVAILABLE
There are currently 4 different styles of number plates that are available to buy: Dateless, Suffix, Prefix and Current. Each format follows a particular style, some are rarer than others and therefore command a higher price. Click here for more details on each style. So, you need to decide what Numbers and letters you want on your plate, i.e. Initials, nickname, date of birth etc. At Moonstone Plates we can do all the searching for you, and we offer this facility completely Free of Charge, you just let us know what it is your wanting and your budget and we can do the rest.
CAR OR CERTIFICATE
When you purchase your reg you will receive it on a retention certificate, you then have two choices, you can either keep it on the retention certificate which is ideal if you are buying as a gift (they are valid for 10 years – then you must renew free of charge) or you can put it onto your vehicle. To do this you will need to have the logbook (V5) for the car BUT be aware you cannot put a registration onto a car to make it look newer, i.e. purchasing a 2022 plate and putting it on a 2016 vehicle. BUDGET
Private reg plates to buy start from as little as £275 and go up to the hundreds of thousands, so it is a good idea to give yourself the maximum you want to spend, as when you do start having a look around the prices will vary a lot.
KEEP IT LEGAL
There are specific criteria when having your number plates made up i.e. materials to use, spacing, fonts, strapline etc. The best place to purchase your actual number plate is again from a reputable, recognised dealer. You do not receive physical number plates for your car when you purchase a plate, these are up to you to have them made up (additional charge applies). You will need to provide proof of ownership (i.e. retention certificate or V5) and photographic ID (Driving licence or passport).
