Can you put a private plate on a mobility car?
Yes, you can add personalised number plates to your mobility car or Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle).
However, it is your responsibility to make sure you follow the DVLA’s online instructions, and that your plate is not offensive to others.
Adding personalised plates at the start of your lease
Before collecting your new car or WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle from the dealership you can ask them to assign your personalised number plate, but they will only be able to do this before your vehicle has been registered. You will need to provide them with your Certificate of Entitlement (V750) if the plates have not been used yetyou’re your Retention Certificate (V778) if they've been registered previously on another vehicle.
If the dealer has already registered your vehicle or they are unable to assign your plates to the car, you will need to follow the steps below.
Adding plates during your lease
If you've already collected your car or got your WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle you will need to go to your Motability Account (you will have been provided this at the beginning of your lease). Again you will need either your Certificate of Entitlement (V750) or Retention Certificate (V778) to enable you to do this.
Removing plates at the end of your lease
Before your lease ends you will need to retain your private plate onto a retention certificate (£80 charge payable to DVLA) for future use. If you don’t do this before the lease ends you will likely lose the plate.
If you want to assign your plates to your next Scheme car or WAVWheelchair Accessible Vehicle, ask the dealership if they can do this for you. Try to speak to them as soon as possible.
