THE MOST EXPENSIVE NUMBER PLATE SOLD? VIP 1

Self-made, Multi-Millionaire, Car Company Boss, Peter Waddell bought his partner Gabby a brand new £500,000 Ferrari Purosangue, with a reg plate costing four times more than the car itself - VIP 1

Peter Waddell, 58, wanted to get a special New Year’s gift for Gabby Nita, 40, he already owns a fleet of supercars, including Rolls-Royce Dawn, Lamborghini Aventador, 20-plate Aston Martin DBS Superleggera then there’s his hyper cars two Bugatti’s, a Veyron and a Chiron, combined worth more than £5m, with one having only clocked 800 miles. He admits to ‘never driving them,’ and said he prefers his Range Rover. They already have a portfolio of exotic plates with this VIP 1 being the latest to add to the collection.

Even seven-year-old son, also called Peter owns his own classic £130k Ferrari with the plate     25 PW which father and son often drive around the family’s 50-acre estate in Bromley, Kent.

Highflyer

When not driving around in one of his supercars, he flies his own £4million Airbus EC130 helicopter with the call sign PJWW.

His 56-room Grade 1 listed Mansion is steeped in history and boasts a swimming pool complex, two gyms, a cinema, music room and tennis courts. Costing £10million initially and has since had millions and millions spent on it.

In fact, 58-year-old Peter loves his dream home so much he has had an identikit mansion built on Spain’s billionaire’s row in Puerto Banus, where his neighbours are Novak Jokovic and Simon Cowell.

‘From Humble Beginning become great things’

Not bad for a lad whose mother had tried to kill him when he was just four years old, living rough and suffering an appalling childhood of abuse and neglect, growing up in a Scottish children’s home in Fairlie, North Ayrshire after spending months in hospital.

Peter, who is deaf and dyslexic, left council care at 16 and after a year of living rough on the streets of Glasgow, moved to London aged 17.

After starting his working life as a taxi driver, he went on to build Big Motoring World, Britain’s biggest second-hand car empire, selling 60,000 motors a year.

Today he is worth more than £500million after branching out into property and haulage.

'You can't change the past, but you can change the future — so that's what I did.'

VIP 1 was first owned by Kilkenny businessman Bill Finnegan in the 1970s who put it on a Jaguar XJ 6. A replica of the number plate was used on the ‘Popemobile’ for the visit of Pope John Paul II to Ireland in 1979.

Finnegan moved to London to work for Gulf Oil but when he tried to change cars a few years later he was told he could not swap the Irish number plate onto a British car.

So, he sold his Jag with the VIP 1 numberplate for £5,500 only to see it sold at auction for £92,000 in 1989. Once owned by Chelsea’s former owner, billionaire Roman Abramovich who bought it for nearly £300,000 back in 2006.

Peter is coy about what he paid for the plate but has reportedly said its worth "well north of £2million".
