How to Make Your Own Number Plate in the UK: Personalise Your Vehicle with Ease

Creating your own number plate in the UK is a fun and exciting way to personalise your vehicle. It is such an easy process and normally in a matter of days it can displayed on your car.

What better way to add a touch of personality to your vehicle and what better way to make your own private number plate, which is a unique and exciting process and here we will guide you through the very straightforward process.

Having a personalised number plate not only makes your car stand out, but it can also be a unique expression of your identity or something meaningful to you. Here we will guide you through the steps to create your own number plate, including the rules you need to follow and how you can purchase one.

Rules and Regulations

First before you start to make your own private number plate, it’s essential to understand the rules set by DVLA to ensure your plate is legal. Here are some of the key regulations:

Format and Style: All UK number plates must follow specific formats such as “AB12 CDE” for newer plates or “A123 BCD” for older plates. The letters and numbers must be clearly visible and spaced correctly.

Font and Size: The font that must be used is the standard Charles Wright font with the size of each letter and number being 79 mm high and 50 mm wide (obviously some letters & numbers will be narrower than this ie 1).

Material and Reflectivity: All UK Number plates must be made from a reflective material with a white background for the front and a yellow background for the rear. Patterned backgrounds are not permitted.

No Offensive Content: Plates must not display any offensive or inappropriate content.

Approved Suppliers: The number plate must be made by a registered supplier like us here at Moonstone Plates who follows all the DVLA's rules.

Ensuring your plate complies with all the above will help avoid any fines or penalties.

Next you need to choose a personalised registration number that holds significance to you.

8 = B, O or A

9 = G or O

11 = H, N or U

12 = R

13 = B

1V = N

V = U

VV = W

Special Dates: Incorporate important dates such year of birth, day & month of birthday or anniversaries

Hobbies or Interests: Show your passion for your favourite football team or your work trade for example: PUP 805S if you run boarding kennels, groomers etc.

Humour or nicknames: Make your own registration plate with your nickname or just a fun novelty plate for example: JOK 73R

Purchasing Your Personalised Number Plate

Once you've chosen your perfect number, it’s time to go ahead and purchase it, because remember there are only ever 1 of that exact plate.

Using a Reputable Private Dealer like us: Here at Moonstone Plates, we specialise in selling personalised number plates and can guide you every step of the way. We have a large stock list to choose from and we also have plates from sellers that are not promoted.

Transfer Fees: Most private plates when purchasing will have a transfer fee of £80, this is payable to the DVLA to receive your V750 (Certificate of Entitlement) for your private number plate, once you assign to your car it will be free to do so.

Documents: Once the plate has be assigned to your vehicle you will receive a new V5 (log book) that will be registered under the private plate – All your MOT and Road Tax details get automatically transferred to the new number so you don’t need to do anything about these as they will still be valid until the expiry date. You do however need to inform your Insurance/Finance Company with the change of number plate – failure to do so will make your insurance void. Here at Moonstone Plates we will make sure that all the correct documentation is received.

We can also supply your physical number plates as a registered number plate supplier, we make sure they follow DVLA’s regulations. To get your new number plate made you will need both proof of identity (such as a driving licence or passport) and Proof of entitlement to the number plate (ie your V750 or V778 document). There is an additional fee for us to do this.
