IN AT THE TOP

In this month’s Auction 1544 C ('Isaac') a Hebrew name of great joy was sold for £43,312 – meaning “He will laugh” and it probably did bring a smile to the buyer’s face.

SECOND

This visually pleasing plate, 86 OO (£33,156), came in at second place which in American English 86 means “Sold out” as this buyer did just that when the hammer went down!!

THIRD

Again, the O making its appearance in the top 5, at third place was taken by 8000 O which may be a special  number to the buyer but may equally have been bought for its visual impact, making good money at £32,257.

FOURTH

We doubt the buyer of  7 HSK at £30,267,  was referring to the international Chinese language proficiency test, so possibly their initials or business.

FIFTH

In at fifth place was 18 UY (£25,799) which spells 'I buy’.

Words

Not sure how this one managed to slip the net as the beady-eyed censors often pounce on plates like this, but it somehow managed to escape into the wild and into the sharp-eyed bidder who parted with £11,777 - OHS 111T !!!!

The buyer of 533 YOU (See You) was happy to say farewell to £11,713 for their chosen combination. £9081 completely disappeared from the buyer of  MAG 71C  (Magic)

Other words sold were  THE 635T ('The best') at £7,591, BAN 96R ('Banger') at £7,168, P424 SOL ('Parasol') at £4,715, SLE 19H ('Sleigh') at £4,600 and CRA 42Y ('Crazy') at £4,587.

Names

It was a name registration that took the top spot in this months auction, but there were a lot of less expensive combinations to be had .

It would seem that the issue of 'Singh' plates is inexhaustible, with January's auction just proving this yet again. DC51 NGH (£7,938), CC51 NGH (£7,797), TE51 NGH (£7,091), KN51 NGH (£5,871) and SW51 NGH (£5,293) along with other less precise variations:

DC51 NGH

CC51 NGH

TE51 NGH

KN51 NGH

'Reuben' registrations were also available REU 66N made £6,384 and RUE 63N achieved £4,458.

Other names included AM74 NDA ('Amanda') at £16,772, RAS 117D ('Rashid") at £15,565, THO 1R ('Thor') at £9,389, NA74 HAN ('Nathan') at £9,081 and AR19 NNA at £9,068.

Miscellaneous

The symmetry combinations or repeated letters and numbers were again in abundance, particularly plates with repetitions of X and/or O/0 that are always eye-catching, and usually seem to make good money, in addition to 8000 O that we saw above, examples this month included OO60 OOO at £11,572, 176 OOO at £10,236, OOO 10W at £4,266 and E900 OOO at £3,329.

The stats

January's DVLA online auction comprised 2,000 lots, 1,966 of which were sold and 34 unsold. Purchasers spent a total of £6,254,714, delivering £5,922,299 to the Treasury.

The next DVLA timed online auction will take place from Wednesday 12th to Tuesday 18th February 2025.
